Trillium sessile

Native Plants

Sessile Trillium

2 Photos

Sessile trillium (Trillium sessile) is an attractive, herbaceous perennial with dark red to greenish-yellow flowers and green or mottled foliage, typically reaching 6-12” tall. While similar to several other trilliums in general appearance, it is adapted to heavier alkaline soils that are periodically moist, though it can tolerate extended dry periods. Sessile trillium performs well in partial shade, but it will tolerate more sun as long as the soil remains moist. In the garden, Trillium sessile makes an attractive companion for woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata), plantain-leaf sedge (Carex plantaginea), false rue-anemone (Enemion biternatum), rue-anemone (Thalictrum thalictroides), wild ginger (Asarum canadense), yellow trout lily (Erythronium americanum), Dutchman’s-breeches (Dicentra cucullaria), and sessile-leaf bellwort (Uvularia sessilifolia). Zones 4-8.
