Summary

Solidago sphacelata ‘Golden Fleece’ is a compact form of the species discovered in North Carolina and introduced by Mt. Cuba Center in the late 1980’s. Its small size has made it very popular and it has received many accolades. In the trial, it performed adequately, but it suffered in the side-by-side comparison with the wild-type species. Given that the species is a much larger plant however, Golden Fleece autumn goldenrod still has a place in smaller gardens where it makes a nice low border plant or ground cover.
