Summary
Also classified as Oligoneuron rigidum, Solidgo rigida subsp. rigida is found in dry sunny areas with sandy or calcareous soil over a large area of the central United States and with smaller populations in the eastern US. This plant produces large, bright yellow flower clusters, and the pubescent foliage has a silvery sheen. Stiff-leaved goldenrod performed very well in the first year of the trial, when it also attracted large numbers of insects, but scores and insect activity declined after that, likely due to rust and lace bug infestation. Solidago rigida subsp. rigida is similar to the top performing Solidago rigida subsp. glabrata which differs in glabrous foliage and stems, a more open and later blooming inflorescence, and a better resistance to powdery mildew, rust, and lace bugs.
