Summary
Solidago fistulosa is a stunning species native to wet habitats along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Despite its extensive native range, this plant has been strangely absent from cultivation. Pine barren goldenrod tied with Solidago rugosa ‘Fireworks’ for first place in the evaluation, which is impressive for a species with relatively unexplored garden potential. Solidago fistulosa contributes to ornamental value in every season thanks to its sturdy stems, attractive and disease-free foliage, upright panicles of canary yellow flowers, garnet fall foliage, and attractive seed heads in winter. Pine barren goldenrod was also a favorite species of pollinators, which flocked to this plant in September and October. Although this species does spread via rhizomes, they can easily be controlled by regular hand removal. Faster spread can be expected in wetter conditions, but the rhizomatous habit can also be slowed significantly by siting the species in drier soils or with competitive plantings.
