Summary
Monarda fistulosa performed very poorly throughout the entire three-year trial. Powdery mildew resistance was very poor, with M. fistulosa usually being one of the first plants each season to develop signs of infection. These plants also had a very floppy habit. During the second year, two of the four plants uprooted themselves as they fell over. Because of this floppiness, it was often hard to accurately assess the floral display. However, M. fistulosa ‘Claire Grace’ is a selection of this species that excels in all areas, and even ranked as one of the top-performing cultivars in the entire trial. ‘Claire Grace’ is a much better, yet similar looking substitute to the straight species.
