Summary
Monarda citriodora ‘Bergamo’ was selected for its darker purple flower color (M. citriodora is a light purple). Although the straight species has its own problems with a floppy habit, we found ‘Bergamo’ to be even worse. The plants are less vigorous and much slower to right themselves after flopping. This would cause ‘Bergamo’ to develop a crook in the middle of the flower spike, whereas, M. citriodora was usually able to recover faster and develop more vertical flower spikes. The dark purple flowers color of ‘Bergamo’ does demonstrate that there is room within this species for selecting new cultivars; however, ‘Bergamo’ does not represent an improvement over M. citriodora.
