Heuchera ‘Obsidian’

5 Photos

Summary

Heuchera ‘Obsidian’ was the highest rated dark-leaved cultivar at the end 2012. Unfortunately, it was stricken with root rot in 2013 after the wettest June on record. The plants struggled to form dense and uniform mounds of foliage throughout 2013 but did not fully succumb to the disease. Miraculously, even after having what should have been lethal root rot going into the harsh winter of 2013, ‘Obsidian’ rebounded strongly in the spring of 2014. As expected, the plants did not perform as well as others in 2014, but the fact that they were alive at all was a testament to their vigor. When grown in full sun, ‘Obsidian’ experienced very slight discoloration. Out of any cultivar in our trial, ‘Obsidian’ performed the best in full sun; however, because of the discoloration, it is not recommended to grow this cultivar in more than 6 hours of direct sunlight.
