Carex stipata var. maxima (stalk-grain sedge)

2 Photos

Summary

Carex stipata, stalk-grain sedge, is a medium-sized sedge found in wet habitats throughout much of North America. Two varieties are recognized; C. stipata var. maxima occurs in the southeast, and is a larger plant than the second variety, C. stipata var. stipata which is found throughout much of the United States and Canada. The former variety was included in the trial at Mt. Cuba Center. Early in the season, the plant displayed lustrous mounds of foliage and attractive spiky golden seedheads. After flowering, the foliage and flowering stems flattened, and a messy appearance persisted for the remainder of the year. The seeds of stalk-grain sedge provide food for many species of wetland birds. This plant could be used for streamside planting and restoration projects.
