Summary
With its arching stems, small Solomon’s-seal (Polygonatum biflorum) adds a refined, vertical arching character to the woodland garden. This rhizomatous perennial flowers in spring with bell-shaped yellowish white flowers borne on the underside of 1-3’ tall stems. Small Solomon’s-seal grows well in moist, well-drained acid soil in partial shade to shade. The bright green leaves of summer give way to attractive yellow fall color that contrasts nicely with the blue-black round fruit hanging beneath each leaf axil. Small Solomon’s-seal is striking in the shade border combined with plants of differing textures such as wild ginger (Asarum canadense), foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia), Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica), and celandine poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum). Zones 3-8.
