Showy Skullcap

3 Photos

Summary

Under-appreciated by most gardeners, showy skullcap is worth adding to almost any garden. The striking terminal spikes of lavender-blue flowers in late spring provide a splash of color after most spring wildflowers have faded. With a neatly formal rounded outline reaching 18″ tall, this species is a refined plant for virtually any garden use, from the front of the garden border to naturalizing in a woodland garden. It is adapted to well-drained, moist to dry soil conditions in filtered shade where it makes a fine companion for Iris verna, Meehania cordata, Hepatica nobilis var. acuta, Tiarella cordifolia, Phlox stolonifera, Fothergilla gardenii, Eurybia macrophylla, and Chrysogonum virginianum.
