Summary
Sensitive fern (Onoclea sensibilis) is a hardy groundcover for moist, shaded areas. This perennial spreads by creeping rhizomes and spores, and will form large colonies in the wild. Sensitive fern usually grows 3-4′ tall, and will grow taller with larger leaves in wetter soils. It tolerates average garden soils as long as moisture is consistent and can become aggressive in suitable conditions.. The fertile fronds emerge in late summer and turn brown, persisting through the winter for lovely seasonal interest. The common name “sensitive fern” is due to the foliage’s sensitivity to drought and the first fall frost. This groundcover is a useful addition to rain gardens, woodland gardens, and naturalistic areas where it can be allowed to fill in. Combine with golden ragwort (Packera aurea), American alumroot (Heuchera americana), and foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia) to form a tapestry of textures in a shaded bed. Zones 4-8.
