Rhododendron prinophyllum

Native Plants

Roseshell Azalea

3 Photos

Few azaleas bring beauty and fragrance to the spring garden like roseshell azalea (Rhododendron prinophyllum). This deciduous, acid-loving shrub is a marvelous plant for use as a specimen or in masses with its extremely fragrant pink, bell-shaped flowers borne in large truss-like clusters. In high, understory shade with well-drained to moist soils, this azalea grows to 4-7’ tall with bright green foliage. Roseshell azalea makes an excellent companion for drooping leucothoe (Leucothoe fontanesiana), Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides), celandine poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum), woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata), mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia), and large-flowered trillium (Trillium grandiflorum). Zones 3-8.
