Summary
The large-leaf aster (Eurybia macrophylla) is an attractive late bloomer in the garden, flowering from late July to September. Clusters of delicate purple-white flowers with yellow centers bloom on 2-2½’ tall purplish stems. Large-leaf aster spreads by rhizomes and often forms dense thickets. The thick, hairy leaves are about 8” long and 6” wide, tapering to a point, and each plant has about 1 to 4 leaves. Due to the large leaves and dense colonies, large-leaf aster is often used as a groundcover. This plant thrives in average soils in part to full shade. Complementary plants include Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides), golden ragwort (Packera aurea), broad-leaved goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis), mapleleaf viburnum (Viburnum acerifolium), and spicebush (Lindera benzoin). Zones 3-8.
