Summary
Hybrid wood fern (Dryopteris ×australis) is a naturally-occurring hybrid between D. ludoviciana and D. celsa. This clumping fern grows 4-5 ft tall with an upright habit. This hybrid is sterile but can easily be propagated by division.
This fern is a great choice for partial to fully shaded beds that are protected from strong winds. Fronds that have fallen to the ground in winter can be cut back in early spring before new growth emerges. It prefers organically rich, well-drained soils of medium moisture. Zones 5-9.
