Summary
Hubricht’s bluestar (Amsonia hubrichtii) is a long-lived and low-maintenance herbaceous perennial prized for its pale blue flowers and golden yellow fall foliage. The star-shaped, ½” wide pale blue flowers are displayed in terminal clusters atop 3’, limber yet sturdy, stems in mid-spring. The bright green, threadlike leaves are up to 3” long, giving the plant a feathery texture. Flowering and fall color are best in full sun, but this plant can take part shade. Plants prefer moist, well-drained soil but will grow in a range of soil moisture conditions.
Hubricht’s bluestar easily grows up to 3’ tall and equally as wide and is deer and rabbit resistant. The plant’s fine texture and mounding habit make it an ideal selection to stage against bolder and more upright plants such as prairie rosinweed (Silphium terebinthinaceum), giant coneflower (Rudbeckia maxima), and New York ironweed (Vernonia noveboracensis). Hubricht’s bluestar is a good selection for a rain garden, mass planting in mixed border, or as a specimen. Flowers attract butterflies. Zones 5-8.
Amsonia ‘Butterscotch’ is a cultivar with yellowish-orange fall foliage. String Theory Hubricht’s Bluestar (Amsonia hubrichtii ‘String Theory’) is a shorter, more compact cultivar.
