Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Mindia’

Native Plants

Coppertina Atlantic Ninebark

2 Photos

Summary

Coppertina Atlantic ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius ‘Mindia’) is a compact, upright and densely branched woody, deciduous shrub. The arching branches grow 6-8’ long, spreading as wide, and exfoliate as they age. It prefers fertile, moist, well-draining soil in full sun to part shade, though it is adaptable to drier soil and will take a location that is occasionally wet or flooded.

A full sun location encourages the best foliage and floral displays. New foliage emerges a coppery-orange and will mature to a dark bronzy-red in the summer. Leaves are 3” long, serrated, and resemble a small maple leaf. Blooming in mid-to-late May, tiny pinkish white, five-petaled flowers are displayed in small, dense, 1-2” rounded clusters in an alternating arrangement along the last foot or so of the branches. Flowers mature to clusters of ornamental, bronze-red seeds, and either in flower or seed, cut branches will liven up a fresh arrangement.

Coppertina Atlantic ninebark is an easy-care shrub and can be pruned to tidy up its form if desired. This should be done immediately after flowering, no later than mid August. This plant also responds well to rejuvenation by cutting back close to the ground in late winter. Position at the back of the mixed border, either massed or as a specimen, and combine with silvery leaved, Valerie Finnis western mugwort (Artemisia ludoviciana ‘Valerie Finnis’) or blue green foliaged golden St. John’s-wort (Hypericum frondosum) to create a dramatic focal point. Suitable for a rain garden, offering a course texture and winter interest. Zones 2-7.
