Summary
Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) is a hardy evergreen fern that can be massed as a groundcover or interspersed in a naturalistic landscape for winter interest. Individual clumps (1-2′ tall) will slowly grow larger over time, but won’t spread or naturalize by rhizome. A mature clump can be divided by cutting it into halves or thirds with a shovel, taking care to keep the roots of the resulting pieces intact and together. Post-division, a plant may take a few seasons to recover and regain a pleasing shape.
Christmas fern naturally grows on well-drained slopes. In level landscapes that drain poorly, plant the root ball at an angle to help prevent crown rot. This fern is tolerant of deer browse, shallow and rocky soils, and drought. When paired with white wood aster (Eurybia divaricata), with which it often grows naturally, it makes an excellent choice for dry shade areas. Zones 3-9.
