7 Photos

Summary

American royal fern (Osmunda spectabilis) is an upright deciduous fern, typically growing 2-3’ tall and wide. This clump-forming perennial has no flowers; brown, tassel-like spore clusters are produced on the tip of the fronds. Fronds are broad, with large leaflets that turn yellow in autumn. Easily grown in humus rich, moist, acidic well-drained soil in partial to full shade, this stately fern attractive as a specimen in a woodland garden or massed. Not favored by deer or rabbit.   Zones 3-9.

This species was formerly classified as a variety of royal fern (Osmunda regalis), a Eurasian species with a large distribution.
