Emily Dickinson’s Gardening Life*

  • This event has passed.

*This program takes place at Haverford College, Haverford, PA. Discover the fascinating life of a gardener and naturalist who became one of America’s most esteemed poets, Emily Dickinson. Marta McDowell, author, horticulturist, and garden designer, will highlight Dickinson’s deeply held interests in gardens and nature, including New England wildflowers. These interests, in turn, shaped her poetry. The talk will be illustrated with poems as well as images of the people, plants, and places that Dickinson loved.

Copies of Marta’s book, Emily Dickinson’s Gardening Life: The Plants and Places That Inspired the Iconic Poet, will be available for purchase and signing after the lecture.

Marta teaches landscape history and horticulture at The New York Botanical Garden, lectures around the country, and has written many books and articles about authors who garden, including Beatrix Potter and Laura Ingalls Wilder. Marta calls this pursuit “the pen and the trowel,” though one of her friends suggested it might also be called “stubborn women who garden.”
