Education Specialist

The Education Specialist is responsible for the development and design of Mt. Cuba Center’s adult/continuing education offerings, onsite and through distance learning. The Education Specialist collaborates with the Public Engagement team to grow program offerings while increasing participation and revenue.

Essential Functions

Course Development and Curriculum Design

  • Oversee MCC’s adult education offerings onsite and through distance learning.
  • Develop and implement education programs designed to inspire an appreciation for the beauty and value of native plants and a commitment to protect the habitats that sustain them.
  • Work collaboratively with intra-departmental MCC staff to prepare a suite of educational offerings for public program guide that meets objectives for the number and diversity of programs related to horticulture, conservation, art, and wellness.
  • Oversee the process of regularly updating and refining MCC’s Certificate in Ecological Gardening program to ensure that the curriculum is of the highest quality and the program is competitive.
  • Identify and recruit outside instructors. Work with instructors to ensure course content is appropriate for MCC.

Education Program Coordination and Execution

  • Work with the Education Coordinator and Manager of Public Engagement to plan program logistics.
  • Lead, guide, and train employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work.

Education Program Administration

  • Work with the Education Coordinator and Manager of Public Engagement to regularly analyze pricing models and reports on revenue, cost, and the effectiveness of MCC’s educational offerings.

Support Strategic Initiatives Related to Public Engagement

  • Work cooperatively with the Manager of Public Engagement and Education Coordinator to help to execute the strategic goals of the institution in support of Mt. Cuba Center’s mission.
  • Collaborate with the Manager of Public Engagement and Education Coordinator to grow program offerings and increase participation in support of Mt. Cuba Center’s mission.
  • Collaborate with Education & Guest Experience Staff to support public programming and outreach efforts under the direction of the Manager of Public Engagement.

Specifications/Qualifications

Education/years & type of experience: Bachelor’s degree in education, horticulture or related field and minimum two years’ experience developing and delivering educational programming.

Certifications, Licenses, Credentials: Must have a valid driver’s license and complete van driver certification within 90 days of hire.

Baseline Knowledge & Skills:

  • Broad horticultural/ecological knowledge required; knowledge of plants native to the Eastern United States preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic educational theory and best practice required.
  • Exceptional writing, communication, presentation and organization skills.
  • Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Knowledge of Adobe Suite is preferred, but not required.

Abilities:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with staff and the public.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new software and hardware applications to support programming efforts.
  • Self-motivated, attentive to details, and the ability to work effectively without close supervision.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to walk over rugged terrain for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs.

The Arborist Assistant is responsible for supporting Mt. Cuba Center Arborists in the long term care of all trees located within their zone of responsibility. This employee will be trained to perform arboricultural procedures necessary for maintaining the trees to Mt. Cuba Center’s standards in the areas of safety, health, function, and aesthetics.

Responsibilities:

Tree Care Assessment & Planning

  • Assist with creation and execution of plans pertaining to tree management
  • Assist with assessments of tree risk and tree health through regular inspections
  • Maintain records for auditing and maintenance activities

Tree Care Maintenance

  • Train to proficiency in ground operations and aerial tree work
  • Perform all phases of tree care, including planting, pruning, cabling, removal through tree climbing or from the ground, and emergency cleanup of storm-damaged trees
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order

Support Guest and Organizational Programs related to Arboriculture

  • Provide knowledge and guidance to support guest and organizational initiatives related to profession
  • Lead, guide, and train employees, interns, and/or volunteers performing related work
  • Carry out other such duties as may be assigned or requested.
  • Participate as a member of Mt. Cuba Center’s community and contribute to related activities as required.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED and 1 year of tree care, landscaping, or related work experience and a general interest in tree care. Must have the ability to safely and effectively operate and maintain a wide range of hand tools, power tools, vehicles and equipment, including the use of chain saws, brush chipper, and manual transmission vehicles. Must be able and willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and to learn and adapt to various software and technology programs to complete work duties. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, organized team player with attention to detail and the ability to manage time effectively and function without close supervision. Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, holidays and special events as needed. This position requires strenuous physical work; frequent standing, bending, twisting, stooping, climbing, as well as occasional lifting, pushing, and pulling of objects over 50 pounds.
