Summer Internships

Our 12-week summer internships are designed for college undergraduate and graduate students majoring in horticulture, related plant science fields, or ecology, and who are interested in getting hands-on training and academic instruction in naturalistic garden design and native plants.

Internship applications are due at Mt. Cuba Center by March 1. Interns must live onsite. Housing is provided. We are currently unable to accommodate foreign applicants.

 

Greenhouse: Learn propagation and production techniques for native woody and herbaceous plants collected from many regions of the Piedmont. These plants are grown for use in Mt. Cuba Center’s gardens and research program. Assist staff in daily maintenance and production activities.

Naturalistic Gardens: Assist with daily maintenance and the ongoing development of the gardens. Learn the design intricacies of naturalistic plantings and discover the complex web of layers that make these gardens unique.

Mapping & Curatorial Assistant: Assis the Plant R ecorder with thorough recordkeeping while learning curatorial techniques used in our plant collections such as inventorying, labeling, and mapping. Gain invaluable experience with BG-BASE ™ and BG-Map, our computerized plant recordkeeping and mapping system. Learn the most up-to-date botanical nomenclature. Opportunities exist to explore special projects.

Natural Lands: Gain knowledge of land stewardship issues, natural area best management practices and exotic plant suppression principles while working hands-on with the Natural Lands Supervisor. Study Piedmont biodiversity, silviculture, wildlife and deer management. Engage in ecological restoration projects, restoring native flora in various habitats throughout Mt. Cuba Center lands.

Compensation and Benefits

Interns are paid $10.50/hour. Intern housing is available on the Mt. Cuba Center property. Academic credit is possible for selected internship activities.
