Docents are responsible for welcoming guests, leading two-hour garden tours, offering information on plantings and landscape design, and answering questions. In addition, they are responsible for assisting with Mt. Cuba Center education programs.
Docents must have an interest or experience in horticulture, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and an ability to lead two-hour walking tours on varied terrain.
Training
Comprehensive training is provided for new docents, as well as continuing training for current docents. Docent training is scheduled as needed.
Training requirements for new docents include the completion of an initial 4-day training program, including review of tour materials, education principles, and in-depth plant orientation, plus one additional half-day training session each week throughout the tour season. New docents must also attend 3 tours led by other, experienced docents. Plant knowledge training is ongoing.
Schedule
Individual docent work schedules vary based on the demand for tours. A typical schedule averages 10 tours in spring and 10 tours in the autumn season. Tours are scheduled Tuesday through Sunday. Education programs are scheduled throughout the week, both day and evenings. The heaviest tour periods are from April to June, and September to November, with occasional summer activities.
Compensation and Benefits
Docents are paid $13/hour. Docents are eligible to attend Mt. Cuba Center education programs at no charge as space allows.
